Puerto Vallarta – Day 4
To pick up where we left off- Last night Tom and I got all gussied up and strolled the malecon (boardwalk) in search of ice cream. We made our way through the hoards of tourists and CLOWNS (they are everywhere on the malecon at night) to a Baskin Robbins. I know- totally cheating on the unique Mexican experience. Then we continued to stroll, in an effort to work it off; We are trying to watch our figures for the wedding.
If you have been following our blog, you’d know that we had the best pizza ever at La Piazzetta and have been thinking about it ever since. Yep, we had it again. MMMM. I can’t wait for everyone else to try it in October! I could eat there every day. But we won’t. There are too many amazing restaurants in PV to only eat at one place.
After dinner we strolled past the gay bars trying to figure out which one we wanted to park it for a drink or two. We decided on Garbos Piano Bar, just steps from our hotel. We showed up just in time to miss the pianist. However, we did meet a 63-year-old man named Tom from Indianapolis. He was a retired History teacher who had been in PV for 16 days. He was sweet. We really liked the bar, which predominately consisted of an older crowd. Next to me were two women, in their 80′s wearing tank tops and short skirts, clad in jewels, and chain-smoking. I swear I don’t think they stopped smoking for even a second. Tom loved their cigarette cases- one covered in rhinestones. They were like the Norm and Cliff of Garbos. Everybody knew their names. The drinks there are on the more expensive side (for Mexico) but they were worth it. Tom’s “vodka on the rocks no fruit” was a good 1/3 bottle of grey goose. I am dead serious. He had two. Then we passed out on the sidewalk. Just kidding! Haha. Then we went back to the hotel and went to bed.
Again this morning, I woke up extremely early but I don’t mind. I like spending time on the computer, so that’s just what I did. Tom got up around 10am. We had comida at “the place next door” (we don’t know then name of the restaurant because obviously it had no lasting effect on us). After lunch, we did some research. Our mission was to scout out clothing for the groomsmen and Tom and me. We found some lovely Mexican linen shirts. Then Tom and I went into this great store and tried on white linen blazers. Tom was wearing a white Cuban shirt today and some sear sucker black and white shorts. His outfit looked AMAZING with the linen blazer. Is it weird to wear shorts in your wedding? It’s an idea of ours. We didn’t really fall in love with anything – yet. We also spent a lot of time in jewelry shops. We are looking for the perfect wedding rings, and if we are getting married in Mexico, why not purchase a Mexican wedding band, right? The only thing is- most of the jewelry in Mexico is sterling silver. The gold and diamond stores are based out of NY. And to be honest, what they carry, we could get cheaper at Macys. We want something unique, and worth more than 200 pesos. The hunt continues.
After a few hours of no luck in the shopping department, I developed a migraine. So I took a nap while Tom visited the beach. A few hours later he picked me up and we had a big late lunch/early dinner at this local Mexican fish joint called El Colera. This place was AMAZING! We plan to take fish lovers in the wedding party there, if they are brave enough. And talk about dirt cheap!!!
Then we had a bit of dessert before trying out a new bar in the hood – O’Rouke’s. Yep- an Irish Pub in the Middle of Puerto Vallarta. I thought it was too funny and just had to go there at least for a beer. Tom and I stayed for hours. There was a cute waiter there name Iggy who we chatted with for a long time. And the décor was terrific- very artsy and Mexican- absolutely the opposite of what you would expect for an irish pub. To be honest – they should change the name. We loved it so much that we talked to the manager and are definitly considering throwing a welcome party there for the wedding attendees! Once we have a final number of people who will be attending we promised to contact him. He couldn’t be more excited. YAY! Wedding planning week has been a great success!!!
Now it’s off to bed – we have to visit Nuevo Vallarta tomorrow; We are going to swim with dolphins.
